In the modern market environment, it is inevitable to be flooded with a variety of inkjet printer ink consumables that are said to be "substitutes" for genuine ones. Ink costs may feel like a bargain at first glance, and attract users with so-called “low prices”. Perhaps on the surface, its performance is indeed very similar to the genuine one, but behind the scenes it is far from reachable.
Manufacturers or brands need to consider more than just loading ink and starting coding. For food manufacturers, from the perspective of ink compliance, only "food packaging applications" can be subdivided into three types.
1. Non-food contact type.
"Non-food contact type" is mainly suitable for packaging materials that can completely isolate ink and food. For example, when you need to print the production date on soda glass bottles or metal cans, the packaging material can completely block the "migration" of ink. A concept of "migration" is mentioned here, because when the ink is printed on the product, the ink molecules will continuously begin to move into the attachment under the action of factors such as time, ambient temperature and humidity, and the properties of the attachment itself. Diffusion, which is an inevitable objective physical phenomenon. Glass and metal can completely block the "migration" of ink, so there are more choices in the selection of ink models.
2. Non-direct food contact type.
In "indirect food contact" applications, caution is required. Although it is spray-printed on the outside of the package, the materials used by the manufacturer are not completely insulating, such as breathable wrapping films, plastic packaging bags, paper packaging boxes and so on. Such materials have certain packaging function protection, but the "migration" of ink cannot be completely avoided.
At this time, the selection of ink should be carefully compliant to ensure the controllability of ink composition for product safety. Enterprises are required to meet hygienic quality requirements in accordance with relevant national regulations in terms of raw materials, personnel, facilities and equipment, production process, packaging and transportation, quality control, etc., and form a set of operable operating specifications.
3. Direct food contact type.
"Direct food contact type", note that it is in direct contact with food, not directly attached to the part that is eaten. From a safety point of view, no inkjet printer ink can be "eaten", not only for humans, but also for animals. No matter what kind of formula ink is used, just from the machine running it does not have periodic cleaning/sterilization of food-grade related specifications, it is doomed that the ink running in it can never be directly "eaten".
Second, different considerations and options are required for different food applications, such as coding on egg shells. We would recommend direct food contact inks for inkjet printers with extremely strict restrictions on formulation ingredients. That is to say, although we believe that the ink is not "edible", all the ingredients developed by it are still strictly in line with the ingredients of food additives, and GMP and other requirements are not a problem.
